shutting-kids-out-family-fortune-wsj: Personal Finance News from Yahoo! Finance

I thought this article was interesting on several levels. First this is a good example of a will carrying out the wishes of the principle subject, gotta believe this was contested and stood up in court. We all have a preference as to how our last wishes are carried out but unfortunately the majority of us leave it up to the government to decide how our assets are distributed. Studies show that around seventy percent of Americans do not have a will drawn up, leaving it up to their last state of residence to divide their belongings up according to that particular states laws. Do we really want the government making our last decision for us? I don't.

The reason most people don't have a will prepared is either because they don't know a good attorney to talk to, or the expense of having an attorney draw up a will and the expense of periodically updating their will. Pre-Paid Legal's Expanded Family Plan includes the Life Events Legal Plan which provides these services among others; Standard Will, Living Will, Healthcare Power of Attorney (Yearly updates/reviews included).

Having a Pre-Paid Legal Life Events Legal Plan for you and your family means a lawyer is available when you need one. Our Provider Lawyers can look over important documents and contracts before you ever sign, or may decide that a call or a letter written on your behalf will help bring resolution to an issue. Enroll today and coverage starts today! Benefits vary by state and province. If you have any questions, please contact me.

The second thing that struck me about this story was the importance of following the law "Honor thy Father and Mother". You never know when mom or pop might hit the jackpot and if you've been a pain all their lives, well, at least your grandkids might be taken care of.

Now excuse me while I go check my family tree to see if I'm connected to this guy in any way.
